Yea! Two weeks ago “schmap” (schmap.com) contacted me asking if they could use one of my picture I had posted on flickr. Couple days ago they sent me a link to the photo and the write up that they have. The picture represents Fort Myers and Cape Coral in their travel guide. They have the following write up accompanying the photo,

Located along the Caloosahatchee River, Fort Myers is the heart of Southwest Florida. A paradise with a lovely Southern pace and in harmony with nature, it is bordered by white seashell beaches, tropical island sanctuaries and crystal waters.

The photo is of an early morning Storm at over the Pier at Fort Myers Beach (Florida) looking towards Sanibel and Captiva islands. I have this photo framed in my living room and it was always one of my favorites from the Fort Myers area.

Recently I moved to Florida for work reasons, a new job. Anyways, I saved all my receipts and that was a good thing. If you moved because of work then you are in luck. Get this, it’s not just people moving because they got new jobs. College students can take advantage of this for there first job too! So here is the deal. If you moved more that 50 miles from your previous job and are going to work 39 weeks in the first 12 months then you qualify. Easy as that. So what can you deduct? Well here is a list of deductible items;

Cost of packing

Gas, or mileage. For 2006 its $0.18 a mile.

Storage expenses for 30 days

Fees to start and turn off services. Such as gas, electric, cable.

Lodging and much more.

I will be taking advantage of this and you should too! For more information on how to deduct your moving expenses check out the IRS and SmartMoney.com

If I was Dale I would have nothing to do with NBC or the media. Speculation in the media is very unprofessional because it causes more problems and half the time what is speculated is not even vastly true. Watch the interview and see what you think. I have my ideas but for now they are just my thoughts. This is a good interview.

Ever since moving to Southwest Florida about 4 months ago I noticed a trend on local news and media outlets. At first I was shocked to hear about it and thought this was just a once in a long while incident. For where I was living back in central New York you never heard of these stories to often in the media. What I am talking about is child predators and sex offenders. Boy was I in for something. I have to say that Southwest Florida has a major problem and many people might not know of it because it is so often reported in the media. It’s not a shock anymore to sit on the couch and watch a late edition of the local news and hear about someone being arrested for child molestation or pornography. It’s almost a weekly maybe daily news story. Some of you maybe thinking I am crazy, but just do a local search of Florida’s Sex Offender Registry, you’ll be amazed. For instance let’s take a look at the local unsolved murder of Coralrose Fullwood from North Port, Florida that happened just a month ago. Immediately after she was found dead just down the road at a housing construction site a total of 67 registered sex offenders and five registered sex predators where all under investigation and questioned. This is a small town with approximately 23 thousand residents making it 1 and every 319 person is a registered sex offender. It’s really sad that we have to worry about these people ruining our lives. Tougher laws need to be enacted or current ones improved. NBC Dateline a short time ago did piece entitled “To Catch a Predator” in Fort Myers, Fl. Fort Myers is located in the Southwest portion of Florida and current counts account for 488 Sexual predators (for Lee County Florida) or offenders. In the NBC sting jointed with Perverted Justice the Fort Myers police department netted 2 dozen or so people. Most have proven not guilty but one has pleaded guilty with a plea deal and accepted to serve nine months in jail and then spend three years on sex offender probation. Is this harsh enough? This is why I have entitled this entry why I’m not surprised about Foley! I’m sure I am not the only one in Florida that isn’t either. This happens all the time. Florida needs to step up there priorities and start to protect there children. However, on the other hand the news media including national media has made us aware and maybe to aware of these predators. With all the stories in the news every day people just don’t take it as a serious problem. They have grown aware of seeing it every day and it gets reported just like a car accident on I-75.

Just has a side note, I haven’t seen to much outrage about Foley in his district. This goes to show you that no one may really care! Maybe because It happens every day here!

Well it’s that time that we have been looking forward to and dreading at the same time. Hurricane Ernesto is on its way but where its going to put a direct hit no one really knows yet. Give it a couple of days and we will know. Today Jen and I went to Wal-Mart in the morning before the rush starts. Our bomb shelter has a decent amount of food but we just need to replenish some items and get some more portable propane tanks for our grill. Being from the north we would prep for snow storms and ice storms, it wasn’t that big of a problem. You would just head over to Wegmans and grab some milk and bread. Well storm preps are much different in Florida. Water and can goods are your friends. If the power goes out in the north you just throw your milk out in the snow and it stays cold. In Florida we have to worry about keeping things cold.

This will be our first hurricane. People keep asking us if we are ready, we think we are but we probably aren’t. We have never experienced this kind of storm and don’t know what to expect. Jen will be working through-out the storm so I will be alone by myself.

Our location is in Fort Myers, FL. I will try to keep everyone updated on the status and photos as long as I have power to do so. Power outages where we live are very common. There may not be a cloud in the sky and the power will go out for a couple of minutes.

It’s defiantly been hot, muggy, and rainy. As they keep saying it’s the rainy season here in Florida. The rain is very interesting and really all depends on the way the winds blow (isn’t that’s what they all say). About three weeks ago when I moved to Florida the local news station was saying that Lee County (the county that I live in) is just about 3 inches below the normal rain fall. Well since that report rain has fallen and it has fallen in buckets. We are now just about 3 inches over the average. At times I think I’m going to have to build an arch. I think more rain has fallen since I have been here than all summer in NY.

When it’s not raining Jen and I have been adventurous. Well if that’s what you want to call it. We have tried to get out on the weekends and have visited the following places:

Fort Myers Beach

Only one of these places we like, maybe two. On July 4th we decided that we were going to run over to Sanibel and Captive Island, hang out by the beach and see the islands that everyone talks glorious about and then check out there fireworks display. These plans didn’t go the way we would have liked them to. The islands aren’t all that great; at least not what everyone makes them out to be. First off you have to pay $6.00 to enter the island over the only bridge. Once on the island there are only limited parking areas for public parking and the cost is $2.00 per hour. This was very surprising. So we decided to take a drive around. After just under two hours of exploring we headed back to Fort Myers, first stopping at The Bubble Room for some lunch. That didn’t sit well in my stomach, and I wouldn’t recommend eating there. For the most part the island was boring, and very naturist, more for the future hippies in the world. However, since we didn’t see the fireworks that night at Sanibel we decided to head over to Riverside (Downtown Fort Myers) and see there fireworks and band.

Really the only place that we like is Fort Myers Beach. It’s more hip and more geared towards our age range. It’s lots of fun with plenty to do. Unlike Naples Beach, if you are hot or need a bit to eat you don’t have to get in your car and drive somewhere, just pick up your wallet and go to a bar for something quick. Naples is alright, it’s more of a getaway trip. It’s expensive but the beach is spread out and quite.

For Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda it wasn’t so great. Though we didn’t know what to expect before we got there we found out it was mostly an older people hangout with shops and restaurants.

I have to say that I am very surprised. At first I didn’t think I was going to like living in Florida. So far I love it. The weather is ok, like I said before it’s the rainy season and it rains every day. The winter months should be great though. As we settle in we are going to be taking more adventures. We have been thinking about the following:

Shuttle Launch in Cape Canaveral

Key West

Miami

Everglades

New Orleans has come up in conversation. One to see the destruction and two to go to a jazz fest of Mardi Gras.

If you have any suggestions please comment. We are willing to try anything.

Well I know I have said this before but a lot has happened since I last posted, and I mean a lot. The main item is that I am no longer in New York. That may come as a surprise to some of you! Sorry if you didn’t know, you do now. So here is the story. About 3 months back Jen had gotten a job down here in Florida, oh yeah, I now live in Fort Myers, FL (thats the second item), and I told her that if she liked the area I would consider looking. Well, I guess she liked it. With my old job at ePlus, things where just staying stead, I wasn’t moving anywhere, and I was seeing many things that I didn’t like within the company. To make a long story short I decided to start posting the resume out and I accepted a job in Fort Myers with SONY Electronics as an Application Developer, or in better terms, a Web Developer. This position was just what I was looking for!

So I have been in Fort Myers for only about 4 days and so far I love the area. It’s hot and sunny, and near the beach, or pool if you don’t want to drive the 20 or so mins. Work starts Monday so more will come on that next week. Pictures will be on my flickr site soon I just don’t have a good connection to the internet. Right now we are using Samantha’s internet connection and can only be accessed in the dinning room. And for all you wondering how I know whose internet it really is, is because Samantha didn’t lock down her wireless router and I logged into it by using the http://192.168.1.1 with the username and password of “admin”. Word to the wise, LOCK you WIRELESS ROUTERS, and CHANGE the password!
