I recently made the jump into the phone 2.0 world last week and it’s been fun. My previous phone, a Motorola Razr from Verizon Wireless was all I needed over the last two years and it had no data or SMS plan. Being a so called computer geek I knew that sometime I needed to make the switch into the real phone world. So I began looking at many different phones and their features. The hardest part of my decision was choosing a service provider. I had been with Verizon for years and never had a problem with the service. Ever since the new iPhone 3G was released, I was pretty much set that it would be the phone that I would get. However, after doing some research about the phone, AT&T coverage vs Verizon coverage, customer service of both carriers and network (data) speeds I decided to stick with Verizon and go with a Blackberry Curve. I think the biggest decision maker was how much more coverage Verizon had and the hassle of switching over a family plan to a different carrier. There would have been activation fees and more money spent buying new phones. So over at Verizon I picked out my new Blackberry. I decided to go with the Curve rather than the Pearl because of the full QWERTY keyboard. The pearl has a shared button keyboard and didn’t really like that. It’s more of a personal preference since they both pretty much do the same thing. Since making the switch I haven’t been happier with my decision. I think the coolest part of the blackberry is the openness of application development and the ability to download whatever application you want. Most people would say that the Apple App Store is much better and I totally agree, but I have learned that pretty much everything that the iPhone can do I can do with the Blackberry. The best benefit is that it’s so much cheaper than the iPhone. I paid $49.00 for the phone + $29.00 for the 4 gig MicroSD card. That’s less than $100! The Blackberry screen may be smaller, less storage, and it may not be touch screen but the blackberry has better battery life and I can replace it without having to send it in for service. Oh yeah don’t forget the development of applications. It’s all JAVA based so download the API from Blackberry and start development!

With about a week on the phone I don’t have any regrets. There is a large contingency of loyal blackberry users and I think I am going to join the group. The interface may not be as pretty as the iPhone but blackberry has come along way and just like web2.0, phone2.0 is going to start gaining speed. So, over the next couple of days I will be writing reviews of my new phone and the applications that I have been using. A small series that I will call the “Ten days of Blackberry, Making your Phone Better.” I hope to answer questions for people that are considering a blackberry or iPhone. I may not be able to answer everything but trust me when I say the answer is out there you just have to find it. The blackberry community is huge, and very helpful.

Another person that was at the opening also sent me some video. His turned out way better than mine. He probably didn’t record it on a camera!

Well Doug and I just got back from another Apple Store Grand Opening. Two weeks ago we were in Estero, FL for the Coconut Point Opening and today we were in Naples, Fl for the Waterside Shops Opening. The one in Naples has a totally different atmosphere than Coconut Point and I think that the Coconut Point store will do more business in the long run. Why you ask? Well not to many nerds that I know are shopping at this store, this store and this store. That’s just to name a couple of stores around the Apple store and inside Waterside. Once again I have uploaded photos to my flickr site and have also posted this short video of the pre-opening events.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Now all I have to do is keep doing web development on the side to save enough money to get a Macbook Pro. I think we are through for a long while with Apple store grand openings. We now have stores from Tampa South and east over to Miami.

Apple fans are very dedicated. First off I should state for the record that I don’t have any Apple products. Not even an iPod however, I am looking to buy a MacBook Pro. The problem is that I just have a hard time putting up all that money for a computer. Anyways back to the point of this post. Last Saturday Doug and I went to the Apple store grand opening at Coconut Point. While there I took a couple of pictures and when I got home I wrote a post and posted the photos on my flickr site. Since Saturday these 5 or so pictures are in my top viewed photos and I have had like 5 or 6 emails asking if I had anymore. Ok so what’s your point Shaun? Well my point is Apple geeks, nerds, followers, fan boys, whatever you want to call them take I guess you could call it pride in what they use. I mean think about this, if I went to a opening of a new Bose store would there be people just out surfing around looking for Bose store photos or the recent grand opening? I highly doubt it. Actually it’s kind of cool and I would have to give props to Apple’s marketing department. This has to be one of the best in the industry. So my question to you is, “Are you an apple fanboy and why?” Tell me something good that will make my buy Apple?

Is Apple going to ruin it for everyone because of there marketing and legal gimmicks? I think it’s funny that Apple has gone this route. Podcasting has made the iPod a very nice investment and now with the Zune player coming out Apple needed to do something. The common internet users think that you need an iPod to listen to podcasts which you don’t. With the release of the Zune player Microsoft may market it as the next generation podcast listener. Not what apple would like! I think this is why Apple is doing what they are doing. Bad choice by Apple since the internet and podcasting community will have to come up with another name. The word podcast has become a internet recognized name. However, things may have to start from scratch again. So what would you like the new podcast word to be? What about MAUDcast = Mobile Audio Casting.

My mother always told me that first impressions mean everything. Back when she told me this I didn’t believe her at all. Well when I started to interview for a full-time job I realized that this was so true. Today more than ever did I realize that this is true. Yesterday at about this time I decided that I would order a 30 Gig iPod from apple.com. I ordered the iPod and choose to get the free engraving. When I submitted my order, using my major credit card and an American Express Gift Card (I knew something was fishy with these damn gift cards), the site came back with an invalid American Express card. That’s fine. I will just resubmit the number, expiration date and I’ll be on my way. Well it went through but with problems. The email that I received said that they got my order and that I should call to verify my payment problem. That’s fine. I called that night and they couldn’t do anything because it didn’t get into there production system just yet. The lady told me to phone back in the morning. Well to make a long story short…I called 4 times today and didn’t get anywhere with my purchase. No one at Steve Job’s company could help me with my order…what a sack of shit. When I got home from the gym the order, 24 hours later, finally came available for me to edit it. It said it wouldn’t be at my door till the 17th of February. Bullshit, I canceled the damn thing and now I’m debating if I even want to deal with apple anymore. Their Customer Service, who are very nice on the phone, are very unhelpful at the same time. They can’t do anything to your order until it’s in the production side which one rep told me should take 15 minutes after you place your order. Mine was 24 hrs later. Another rep told me just order another one this one will never get into our system because of the Gift Card. Apple let’s get your shit together if you want to beat those dull little computers performing dull little tasks, because right now you have a dull customer support. And remember what my mother always said, “First impressions mean a lot.” This was going to be my very first purchase from apple.com. Maybe ill try the store tomorrow and see what they can do. I bet if I purchase an iPod they will have no problem processing those gift cards that I have.
