Weekend Project

September 15th, 2007

Right now I am not a home owner so you won’t see me putting on a deck or doing reconstruction on a bathroom. However, I do have a vehicle and this week my weekend project is to get it looking new. Back when I was in college I used to detail cars at Delta Sonic Car Wash in Rochester, New York so I sort of know how to do this. This morning at 8am I started that project and after 3 hours, part one is complete.

  • Part One - Clean the Dash and all rubber, plastic, and non cloth interior areas, this includes door jams. Have you looked at your door jams? I bet they are dirty, dirty, dirty! At Delta Sonic we used Vinylex to clean these parts. The only real tools you need is a bug sponge, and a nice cloth, but a paint brush and a air compressor to get those dirty small spots helps out a lot. All you have to do is spray the Vinylex on the sponge or on the part and scrub it in and wipe it off. You will know if you missed any spots once you wipe off the product.
  • Part Two (If Needed) - If you have leather seats use Lexol on them. Just read the directions on the spray bottle.
  • Part Three - Wash inside windows.
  • Part Four - Vacuum Floors and Seats.
  • Part Five - Wash outside of the car.
  • Part Six - Hand wax with Mothers Wax.
  • Part Seven - Drink a Cold Beer.

That’s it. Simple but long.

On my VW Rabbit, I use the following products: Two microfiber cloths for the windows, two microfiber mitts for washing (one exclusively for the wheels), generic window cleaner (from AutoZone), Meguiar’s gold class car wash, the California car duster (and California dash duster for interior), the Absorber for drying, and the California water blade for drying.

I haven’t waxed it yet (it’s only been 3 months) and I have cloth seats. Leather seats must be killer down in FL, no?

I don’t have leather seats. I haven’t seen many if any cars with leather seats in them.
