Robert E. Murray - The Real Deal or Whack Job

August 9th, 2007

I have been watching most of the daily briefings of the Utah coal mine collapse and at first thought that Robert E. Murray, CEO of Murray Energy, and owner of 50% of the mine was the real deal. He was up-beat and wasn’t putting up with any of the media’s nonsense. It was great watching him. At one point he stopped the press briefing due to a media chopper in the area. He waited till it was gone saying he has told the media basically there was nothing here to see with helichoppers. At other times he was so set in believing that an earthquake was the cause of the collapse that he went to great lengths to supply data to show just that. Many media and other scientists don’t think this, and say the seismic activity was caused by the collapse of the mine. But, after listening to last nights briefings I have gone with the opinion that this guy is a whack job. He keeps saying that the families of the minors and the minors are all that matters, but it seems as though every time he steps in front of the damn camera he is trying to defend himself and his mine. Last night he allowed some media to go in the mine with them to show them just what’s going on (CNN Video here). Maybe it is just the way he carries himself in front of the media. I am sure that if the outcome is not what everyone hopes for you will see him on an all out media blitz to defend his operation and his image.

I was suppressed that I couldn’t find a wikipedia article on him or his energy company.

Here are some interesting articles that I have found online and are worth reading.

  1. “Mine Collapse: Spotlight On Murray Energy”
  2. “Mine Owner Faces Old Foes After Collapse”
  3. “Bob Murray uses Utah mining tragedy to attack Global Warming”

What do you think about this guy? Is he the Real Deal or a Total whack Job?

This is to who ever it concerns. Mr. Bob Murray has been my husbands employer for 16 years and in this amount of time he has got to know Mr. Murray as a person as well as one of the best business men in America. This is a very special person. To his employee’s he could not be more caring, generous, or giving. Mr. Murray dosen’t have to try to be something that he is not. He already, to his employee’s, is everything a good man could be. It makes all of us, that know Mr. Murray, sick to know that people that only know him through the media can sit back on their couches and judge this wonderful man in a negative way. How would you react if you were in his shoes? Have you ever had employee’s killed or hurt? Employee’s that were also concidered your friend and your coal family.
He did an excelent job of carring himself in the eye of the public. You tell me another CEO that would get down and dirty the way Mr. Murray did in this terrible event. Please don’t judge someone so harsh until you know them well enough to judge. I did learn as a small child that we are not to judge at all.

I never had to ask Mr. Murray for anything, but you can bet, if I did, he would do anything for us. It would only be in the asking to receive. And we would do no less for him. He is a very good man and no other man could fill his shoes. Thank you. Very loyal employee’s wife.
