I have been watching most of the daily briefings of the Utah coal mine collapse and at first thought that Robert E. Murray, CEO of Murray Energy, and owner of 50% of the mine was the real deal. He was up-beat and wasn’t putting up with any of the media’s nonsense. It was great watching him. At one point he stopped the press briefing due to a media chopper in the area. He waited till it was gone saying he has told the media basically there was nothing here to see with helichoppers. At other times he was so set in believing that an earthquake was the cause of the collapse that he went to great lengths to supply data to show just that. Many media and other scientists don’t think this, and say the seismic activity was caused by the collapse of the mine. But, after listening to last nights briefings I have gone with the opinion that this guy is a whack job. He keeps saying that the families of the minors and the minors are all that matters, but it seems as though every time he steps in front of the damn camera he is trying to defend himself and his mine. Last night he allowed some media to go in the mine with them to show them just what’s going on (CNN Video here). Maybe it is just the way he carries himself in front of the media. I am sure that if the outcome is not what everyone hopes for you will see him on an all out media blitz to defend his operation and his image.
I was suppressed that I couldn’t find a wikipedia article on him or his energy company.
Here are some interesting articles that I have found online and are worth reading.
- “Mine Collapse: Spotlight On Murray Energy”
- “Mine Owner Faces Old Foes After Collapse”
- “Bob Murray uses Utah mining tragedy to attack Global Warming”
What do you think about this guy? Is he the Real Deal or a Total whack Job?
