Dance Comes to a “Grinding” Halt
November 17th, 2006
A dance at Fayetteville-Manlius High School in Fayetteville, NY (just outside of Syracuse, NY) has come to a grinding halt. Administrators at the school have canceled the dance due to suggestive dancing. Grinding also known as freaking was spotted at previous dance events and has concerned parents and staff. The previous dance had been stopped 15 minutes early due to the sexual dancing. An administrator was quoted in the Syracuse Post Standard as saying
“The next dance, to be held in February, will be combined with an “activity night,” with alternatives such as volleyball and badminton offered. If someone is caught “grinding,” they’ll be asked to leave the dance floor and can join another activity.”
This is just what high school’ers want to do, play volleyball with there friends on a Saturday night while all there friends are dancing. Should we be worrying about how students are dancing? I’m not sure this is an issue that our schools should be worrying about. The school system needs to focus more on education and getting kids to learn. What do you think?

So the kids are “punished” by being forced to play volleyball? Some might consider that punishment but how is that going to solve anything? And I’m not so sure putting all the kids that were caught grinding in the same room is a good idea. Maybe they should force them to watch MTV, then they can clearly avoid the situation. Banning it will just makes it more desireable to the kids. And if you do they will find another place to do it where it will become worse. These kids probably aren’t dying to get into school dances, so maybe instead they should supervise the situation. Allow it, but with rules.

Umm, Grinding or Freaking is not appropriate at school functions such as a dance. This is a school not an all out orgy. Any sexual suggestions and or materials are not allowed on school premises. I think you can go to any school in the country and find this is true. The administration did the right thing. Education goes way beyond what students learn in the class room about integers and the causes of the Civil War. Its called sex education! Shouldn’t we be discussing situations like Florida teachers having sex with 15 year old boys.

I’ve never heard of freaking or grinding untill this article, so I’m not exactly sure what it is. I definatley agree that it dosen’t belong in school an that sex education is probably the answer. I don’t think it should have gone this far. It’s crazy to think that kids think they can get away with it and that it’s okay.
