Ernesto Does the Shuffle

StormMore uncertainty with Ernesto has arisen. It seams that the storm has moved to the east over night. It now looks like it could miss SWFL all together however, it is still south of us so we are not out of the woods yet. I have a feeling that the storm will shift again over night. The 2pm advisory just came out and the track didn’t change that much. Look for the 5 and the 11pm advisories for a better sense of where Ernesto will head. The weather here is great, Sunny with some clouds!

As Ernesto Approaches

symbolWell it’s that time that we have been looking forward to and dreading at the same time. Hurricane Ernesto is on its way but where its going to put a direct hit no one really knows yet. Give it a couple of days and we will know. Today Jen and I went to Wal-Mart in the morning before the rush starts. Our bomb shelter has a decent amount of food but we just need to replenish some items and get some more portable propane tanks for our grill. Being from the north we would prep for snow storms and ice storms, it wasn’t that big of a problem. You would just head over to Wegmans and grab some milk and bread. Well storm preps are much different in Florida. Water and can goods are your friends. If the power goes out in the north you just throw your milk out in the snow and it stays cold. In Florida we have to worry about keeping things cold.

This will be our first hurricane. People keep asking us if we are ready, we think we are but we probably aren’t. We have never experienced this kind of storm and don’t know what to expect. Jen will be working through-out the storm so I will be alone by myself.

Our location is in Fort Myers, FL. I will try to keep everyone updated on the status and photos as long as I have power to do so. Power outages where we live are very common. There may not be a cloud in the sky and the power will go out for a couple of minutes.

Unsecured Wireless Networks

wireless routerWireless is here and is going strong. About a year ago I decided that it was time to get a wireless router even though I didn’t have a notebook. You my ask why and the reason was very simple. First is that I had the money and secondly was that I didn’t want to run my cable cord all the way around the apartment just to hook up my computer. So I purchased a D-Link wireless router and a Wireless PCI card. Things work great. Ever since I moved to Florida I find that unsecured wireless hubs are popping up more and more when I try to find a network to connect to on my new notebook. In fact this weekend Jen and I are in Tampa attending her cousins wedding and staying at her grandmothers new condo. I booted up my notebook and wa-la 7 wireless connections 3 of which are unsecured and 1 of which I am writing this post on. It’s quite amazing that people just plug there routers into there modem and then into the outlet. In fact it is very easy now to find default usernames and IP addresses to log onto the router which someone who knows what they are doing can do some serious damage and even lock the owner out of gaining a connection. Believe me it’s not just the normal average user that is doing this. In fact if you look at all my available connections one is listed as ClearWater Mattress which is the company on the main street just behind the condo, and yes it’s unsecured. So with the advent of wireless data communication there comes responsibility both from the borrower, and the owner. If you are using someone’s connection be responsible and use the connection in a good manor, and as an owner take the time to read up on securing your connection. It’s only your fault if the RIAA comes along and says that you are stealing music when you don’t even do it. Beware it could be someone else borrowing your connection.
