Comcast-icly Slow

ComcastThe past couple of weeks Jen and I have noticed that our broadband connection through Comcast has been slow. I haven’t really tested out the download and upload speeds but I am going to soon. On Technorati I did a search on tags labeled Comcast. Boy did I find a lot of problems that people have faced with there online service. Most posts are about how Comcast has blocked IP’s and blacklisted Email addresses due to spam. However, some are about slow connections. Not much information out there though on how to resolve the slowness problem. Though, the lighting storm that struck this morning didn’t help the situation either. Lighting had hit the cable box outside our condo and traveled through the coax cable only to blow out Jens 19inch TV in our bedroom. Cable since has been restored and things are working fine but the internet connection is noticeably slower.

So if you have encountered the same problem and want to know how slow your connection really is, look no further. Here are is a list of links that will help you zero in on your connection speed

  1. Network Garage
  2. McAfee SpeedoMeter
  3. ZDNet Connection Speed

Hope these tests help you find out if your connection is slow. If the slowness continues through next week I’ll be contacting Comcast.

FYI – Remember to check your speed that you have ordered. I know that Comcast has 2 or 3 different speed ranges that you can order from.

Dealing with Leftovers

I would have to say that the weather men/women got tricked on tropical storm Ernesto.  It defiantly tricked everyone here in Florida.  All the he really did was dump some rain and make it a damp gray day.  Not many people knew what to expect this time last night.  The storm was supposed to intensify a little and push more towards the west coast however, once it hit land it died.  Now the main part of the storm has passed and is heading northeast we can wait for the next one.  Till then we will have to deal with the leftovers of Ernesto till tomorrow.

Photo GeoTagging a Success

GPSFlickr.com released a new functionality this week for there users, GeoTagging. This is a very cool function. It allows you to place your images on a map so that you can virtually see where the picture was taken from. As of now Flickr is the only company out there using this functionality, and it has been a success so far. TechCrunch is reporting that with in the first 24 hours of allowing users to geotag, they have had 1.2 million images placed on a map. However, Fickr will not be the only company getting into this arena. Google’s Picasa is in the works of adding geotagging and will be available to place images on Google earth application. This is still in the beta stages so Flickr will have a pretty good gathering of users before Google can get there application released.

I like the idea of geotagging because it allows a person to search for pictures based on a particular location. Though, I thought it was very time consuming to add images to the map. Flickr allows you to drag and drop an image or a set of images that you want to be geotagged. Hopefully in the future camera makers will add a small GPS chip to the camera which will add metadata to the photo with the latitude and longitude of the picture when it was shot. This would then allow you to easily be able to geotag your photos.

Many people are talking about Flickr’s Geotagging and I would call this a success for yahoo in the web2.0 (if that’s what you want to call it) war. Yahoo has beaten Google in picture geotagging.

Westward Hoe Ernesto

Now this isn’t an old western classic but a shift in our course. Tropical Storm Ernesto has made a shift back west. Tropical Storm warnings have been posted from the Everglades all the way up to Tarpon Springs. This is as of the 11am Advisory from the National Hurricane Center. A better idea of the course will come at the 2pm advisory and the 5pm advisory.

Storm Track as of 11am

The Talk is Mindy Kaling’s Breast

Breasts

It seams like everyone on the blogs are talking about Mindy Kaling’s breast. Yes, as I was looking at technorati I found this under the exclusive section. Basically Mindy had a nipple slip during an acceptance speech from the cast of The Office. Oh you want to see the video? It’s not hard to find but here is the link to the most popular one. It’s amazing that NBC allowed this to go through even after the good old Super Bowl Nipple slip. If you watch the video in real time I bet you don’t even see it. However, when the video is slowed down you can. Anyways, it’s not that big of a breaking news story. It’s amazing that bloggers are blogging about it. I can’t even believe I am even writing this much on it. OK that’s enough I’m off to work I guess.
