Rochester D & C Get Make Over
March 22nd, 2006
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle gets a web make over. It’s nice, but has some serious errors when tested for Section 508. I have been more and more aware of accessibility ever since Justin started talking to me about it. Many people don’t think too much about it, but it’s the law. Just look at Target.com. They are getting sued for not complying and one main issue in the suit is that the site has missing ALT tags on images. The reasons for alt tags are so that screen readers can interpret images for the blind. Think about it. What if you have submit button that was an image without an ALT tag? If the user was using a screen reader they would never know how to submit there order, potentially losing a customer or facing a law suit. When you run Cynthia against the D & C the first error that it shows are that there are missing alt tags. If media is going to start using the web as a medium, then they must start to conform to Section 508 to be successful.
